For the third year in a row, Thommessen is pleased to invite you to our New Year's seminar where we, together with industry experts from Pareto Securities, will have a closer look at some of the key trends and developments shaping the maritime sector in 2025: EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime, contractual challenges in connection with armed conflicts and the impact of geopolitical unrest on the shipping market.

Agenda

08:00 - 08:30

Registration and light breakfast

08:30 - 09:00

EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime – General update, experiences so far and how to plan for the future
Partner Mads Haavardsholm and Senior Associate Sofie Mæland Tykvenko from Thommessen will give a brief update on the inclusion of the maritime industry in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) one year after coming into force in 2024 and guide you through the FuelEU Maritime Regulation entering into force on 1 January 2025. These two instruments are the key instruments implemented by the EU in an effort to reach the "Fit for 55" target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.

09:05 - 09:25

Ongoing armed conflicts – Owners' position towards banks, insurers and charterers
Armed conflicts and sanctions continue to put pressure on Owners' relationship with their banks, insurers and charterers. Thommessen Partner Henrik Hagberg and Specialist Counsel Emilie Falch will look at specific challenges which arise in connection with trading and sanctions clauses in financing agreements, insurance contracts and charterparties and steps to take to align same.

09:30 - 09:50

Geopolitical tensions and conflicts – Impact on the market; trading patterns, freight rates etc.
Geopolitical tensions and conflicts play a crucial role in shaping global trade dynamics. Russia's invasion of Ukraine with the ensuing sanctions and export restrictions targeting the Russian economy, the tensions in the Middle East, including attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, and the growth of the dark fleet are some of the geopolitical factors impacting the maritime industry. Pareto Securities' Head of Research Eirik Haavaldsen and Analyst August Klemp will present their views on how some of these geopolitical factors impact the shipping market.
